BRUSH CREEK ONLY

NC AWARD WINNER

Brush Creek Elementary School was named a Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education on Tuesday, Sept. 15th.  It is the only school in the state and one of 314 nationwide to receive the designation.

Schools must meet two criteria to be named a Blue Ribbon School: They must have at lease 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds, and they must dramatically improve student performance on state standardized tests or score in the top 10 percent of state assessments.

More than 95 percent of the school's students were proficient on the end-of-grade math tests.  Only 70 percent of students reached that target three years ago.  In reading, 89 percent of Brush Creek students had passing scores last school year, compared to the previous year.

The dramatic increase in score comes from carefully analyzing student assessments and addressing needs throughout the school year.

Teachers also work together in teams and discuss how the curriculum is being delivered and how students are progressing.

 Way to go Brush Creek!!!

A Message from the Principal

The end of the fall season is quickly approaching with the holidays and winter not far behind. Many parents have concerns regarding absences due to flu and other illnesses this year. Please provide your child’s teacher with doctor notes for days missed. Brush Creek Elementary will be looking at attendance in December for the first half of the year. The state and local policies require the school to send attendance letters home when students reach certain numbers of absences. If you have concerns about these letters please do not hesitate to call your child’s teacher or myself here at school.

November promises to be busy month. We have several grade level field trips planned along with programs for Veteran’s day and the Red Herring Puppet production. Brush Creek will hold the annual health fair on November 3rd and 4th. Please remember that school will be closed on November 11, 25, 26 & 27 for holidays.
